Lawmakers hammered out a deal with Governor Pawlenty on Friday after months of negotiations about the state-funded medical care program for Minnesota’s poorest residents.

Just hours after the House and Senate passed a bill funding GAMC, Governor Pawlenty vetoed the bill.

Approximately 500 people showed up at the Capitol on a cold but sunny day to call on Legislators to support mental health care funding. With the Governor’s budget taking deep cuts out of mental health care funding, and GAMC deadline looming, advocates made sure their message was clear: mental health care funding is essential to the well-being of individuals, families and the state of Minnesota.

The Governor’s supplemental budget calls for over $2 million in reductions for mental health care funding this year and even more through fiscal year 2013.

Minnesota Human Services Commissioner Cal Ludeman today announced plans to continue providing health care coverage through MinnesotaCare for people enrolled in the General Assistance Medical Care (GAMC) program when the program funding ends on March 1.
