Minn. House eyes limits to gun access, ownership -- CSN's Executive Director testifies

ST. PAUL, Minn. — As state lawmakers prepared to weigh more than a dozen gun-control measures that have been introduced in the Legislature, hundreds of spectators gathered to hear the details and comment on the proposals.

When the House Public Safety Committee began taking public testimony on two of the measures Tuesday, the House hearing room was not big enough to hold all the interested spectators, so staff members had to open up another room down the hall to handle the overflow.

Special Needs BasicCare

A managed health care plan called ‘Special Needs BasicCare (SNBC)’ is expanding.

Beginning January 1st, 2012, anyone younger than 65 enrolled in Medical Assistance (MA) and certified as having a disability will be automatically enrolled in a managed health care plan known as SNBC, unless they choose to opt out. Everyone affected by this change will receive a letter informing them of the new enrollment process; some letters have already been sent out. This change will not affect children on the TEFRA program until a future date.

Health care reform will benefit many Minnesotans, analysts say

The federal overhaul of the nation’s health care system will create financial winners and losers in Minnesota, an economist told state leaders meeting Thursday in St. Paul.

Young, healthy and wealthy folks who have saved money in the past by purchasing skimpier health insurance coverage could be among the losers, said Jonathan Gruber of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

State task force begins work on crafting health insurance exchange

St. Paul, Minn. — You may have heard about health insurance exchanges. They’re often likened to websites like Travelocity or Expedia — places where consumers can compare and purchase competing products in the free market. But so far, there haven’t been many details about how they’d work.

Now, members of Gov. Mark Dayton’s insurance exchange task force met for the first time Tuesday in St. Paul to begin the job of shaping an exchange for Minnesota.
