A Warmline can be defined as a telephone contact line that provides information support, encouragement and referral to consumers of mental health services. It can also provide general information on mental health community activities and referrals for family members and the public at large.
According to Daniel Fisher, M.D., Ph. D., warm lines are a form of social support and a complement to hot lines. Indeed, the Mental Health Consumer Survivor Network (CSN) can testify to how valuable these services are for people who suffer with a mental illness. Many times people are lonely, depressed, or just want to talk to someone; however, they don't feel they are in a crisis. A warmline provides a safe, secure, confidential place to turn.
The purpose of a warmline is to primarily provide support.
This can be done by listening, chatting, empowering someone to make changes,
problem solving, informing them about the facts of mental illness and
referring the professional help as needed.
The Warmline in NOT a crisis line. It is used to encourage people who
suffer from mental illness find ways towards recovery that works for them.
People who work/volunteer for the Warmline are chosen very carefully. They must go through an interview process. In addition, they also must go through very rigorous training. Topics include ethics, boundaries, confidentiality and how to recognize the difference between a call that is appropriate for the warmline and one that is actually a crisis call. CSN has a number of warmlines in place statewide. Because of the high level of experience and expertise CSN has the Warmlines have been very successful.
There are a number of benefits that warmlines peovide people with mental health issues. There is a great deal of interest and support of having one provided in this region. A number of consumers have expressed an interest in participating. CSN would like to help establish a warnline in this area. This has been a very brief overview of the benefits and purpose of a warmline. In order to create a warmline in this region, your financial help is needed.
